In a few of our previous blogs, we have told you about the Tamil Nadu government making some provisions for the government school students who clear NEET. On July 14, 2020, the Tamil Nadu Cabinet has approved the provision. So, with this provision, a 7.5% quota with the existing reservation will be provided to students who clear NEET UG. This will be applicable only in case the students have done their class 5-10th from the state government schools of Tamil Nadu. This provision will also cover government seats in private medical colleges.
Tamil Nadu government has earlier asked for an exemption from NEET as it seems that the examination is not equal for all classes of students. Most of the students who did not take coaching or did not drop a year for NEET were not able to crack NEET.
The students who come from government schools were not able to clear these kinds of entrance examinations because most of them could not afford coaching classes neither can afford to drop. Keeping all this in regard, the government has taken this step for the welfare of all the students of their state.
This cabinet meeting was chaired by the CM K Palaniswami. The Tamil Nadu government had earlier made a panel along with teachers and other education experts to analyze why government school students were not able to clear NEET. The panel pointed out some points like the cognitive gap between students of state government schools and private or other schools.
If we look at the stats of Tamil Nadu, it is visible that after the implementation of NEET, only 14 government school students were able to get admission into medical colleges. Whereas from the data of 2016, we can say there were at least 34 government school students who joined medical colleges. The approval of this provision will be surely appreciated by all the students of Tamil Nadu government schools.
