Supreme Court Ruling on Stipends for Foreign Medical Graduates

“Foreign Medical Graduates cannot be treated differently”- Supreme Court

On April 1st, 2024, the Supreme Court made a historic decision for foreign medical graduates pursuing internships in Indian government medical colleges. With this decision, the Supreme Court mandates equal stipend to foreign medical graduates just like the Indian Medical Graduates.

Moreover, the Supreme Court instructed the National Medical Council (NMC) to provide further details regarding the equal stipend for Foreign Medical Graduates particularly in the government medical colleges- Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College in Vidisha, Dr. Laxmi Pandey Government Medical College in Ratlam, Employee State Insurance Corporation Medical College in Alwar.

This decision followed a petition from a group of doctors who pointed out that some medical colleges were not paying stipends to foreign medical graduates during their internships.
